Mission:
Prologue: Starting A New Life
Location: Starbase 17
Timeline: MD001-1136 Hours
The small shuttle craft slowly glided across the vast blackness and made a slight turn, heading for Starbase 17. The base, which hung in space like a Christmas tree ornament, was slowly spinning. It slowly began to fill the large view screen as the pilot manipulated its delicate control panel. It had been almost a year since Yiggtissi had set foot on a base and he looked forward to eating a proper meal at the commons. The USS Challenger had been set to patrol the border of the neutral zone between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. However, since the signing of the peace treaty earlier in the year, the mission had become defunct and the brass at Starfleet felt it was time to bring it home for a much needed refit that would take a couple of years. Most of the it's crew had been reassigned and Yiggitssi was no different. When Captain Commer had advised him that he was up for the chief medical officer's position on the USS Wasp, he knew his hard work had not gone unseen.
The shuttle made its way into the bay and softly touched down on the deck. The area was filled with numerous colors of red, gold and teal uniforms hastily making their way across the bay, some carrying equipment but most of them were just going from one turbo lift to the next.
" Well there you go sir." The young pilot stated. "I hope your ride wasn't too bad."
Yiggtissi smiled briefly. He scooped up his duffel bag and stood, stretching his long green limbs. He waited for the doors to be released before turning to say his goodbyes to the ensign. The small talk they had over the last coupe hours had become somewhat personal, covering everything from the officer's families to hobbies to include a small stint on bio mechanical implants.
"It was very enjoyable ensign.' Yiggtissi stated as he made his way out of the door. Before stepping down from the shuttle, he grabbed hold of the hand rest and thrust his head back into the cockpit. "Please tell your family that I am praying to the First One's for their 'whores' to be free of sickness."
The comment had caught the young man off guard but he knew what the Saurian had meant. His family had raised horses for generations in Montana and some of them had fell deathly ill over the last year. He smirked, trying to hold back a boisterous laugh.
"I think..well.." He stuttered, trying to hold back the his smile. "I think you meant HORSES sir. But I will tell them. Tell your wife I said hello."
Yiggtissi let go of the hand rail and slumped into a standing position near the shuttle, his head hung in embarrassment. After being with humans for more than 5 years, you think he would have mastered the art of Federation standard. He shook his head. As he turned around, his tongue fluttered out of his mouth and quickly wiped both eye balls, providing them with much needed moisture. It happened so fast that most people didn't see it. For those that did, they learned to ignore it. Yiggtissi made his way over to a large holographic board where several officers had gathered. They were looking and pointing as various Starfleet ships and registry's faded in and faded out. No doubt they were trying to ascertain what assignment they had had landed. As the tall lizard stood a couple of feet higher than most humans, he was able to view the board without strain.
He smiled as he saw what he had came looking for. A vessel faded in and a list of new officer transfers began to appear one by one.
USS WASP....CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER....LIEUTENANT JG YIGGTISSI....TRANSFER FROM USS CHALLENGER....REPORT TO DOCKING BAY 143-OMEGA
Yiggtissi read over the message twice before it sank in. The excitement of running the medical department aboard a star ship was an adventure that he was more than prepared for. After running the emergency medical department at the Antidis Memorial Medical Center on Sauria, he felt ready for anything. Of course, they were two different worlds. On his home world, most of the injuries that came into the emergency department were hatch-lings. The little ones were very active and were always falling from trees or tumbling down rocks.
It took several minutes for Yiggtissi to make his way through the crowded shuttle bay to a turbo lift marked for docking bays. He threw his Starfleet issued bag on his back and climbed aboard. He shuffled his way to the back of the turbo lift as several other officers filed in. Yiggtissi remained silent as the gaggle of crewmen made small talk. He felt a bit out of place. There were only a handful of Saurians serving in Starfleet so his name had gotten around certain circles. The lift finally stopped and the doors slid open to a large transporter room. There was a large window adjacent to the transporter controls and Yiggtissi stopped briefly to admire the view. Various ships of various classes waited patiently in the docking bay. Small shuttles and workbees could be seen shuffling from ship to ship. He looked over past a ship that appeared to have been badly damaged and was receiving some loving care from several yellow support craft. And there is was. The USS Wasp. She was a fine representation of the Constitution class. He was startled by a voice behind him.
"Sir, do you have your posting orders?" The older gentlemen wore a yellow command shirt and the rank on his sleeve indicated he was a Master Chief.
Yiggtissi dug the small PADD from his his bag and handed it over to the man.
"Of course Chief. "
He glanced over the details on the screen for several seconds and smiled as he looked back up at Yiggtissi. He pointed the PADD toward the window in the direction of the USS Wasp.
"She is a fine ship, sir." He stated. "If you you'll give me your bag, I will make sure we beam it directly to your quarters on deck six. We are ready to beam you over at your leisure sir. Commander Venik is waiting to greet his staff."
Yiggtissi nodded, handed his bag to the chief and followed the him to the transporter pad. Yiggtissi had read a dossier on the Vulcan commander and was impressed by his illustrious career. Since Suarians very rarely displayed their emotions in public, he knew that he and the Vulcan would work well together. Yiggtissi stepped on the pad and gave a nod to the transporter technician, who played the controls like an antique piano. The view of the transporter room faded away in a glow of golden sparkles and the high pitched hum of the transporter buffers.
Yiggtissi's vision came back and the view of another transporter room came into view. He squinted before the effects of the beam wore off and noticed a figure in a golden uniform standing next to the controls. Finally, his vision was clear and Commander Venik stood, hands clasped behind his back, near the one of the Wasp's technicians.
Yiggtissi stepped down and made his way to the Commander.
"Commander Venik. I am Lieutenant JG Yiggtissi, you chief medical officer. Permission to come aboard sir?"
"Permission granted Doctor." The Vulcan said stepping forward towards the tall Saurian, "Welcome aboard the USS Wasp."
Yiggtissi gave the commander a small grin. He noticed the Vulcan wore his hair a bit nontraditional, with his wavy brown hair styled in a messy sort of a cut. He also noticed the Vulcan was a bit more muscular than he had remembered when reading his Starfleet file.
"Thank you Commander." Yiggtissi stated firmly. "I was very excited to know my transfer was approved. I would very much like to get to sickbay as soon as possible. I have a container of medical equipment coming aboard that I would like to handle personally. I would feel honored if you could accompany me sir."
The Saurian had a few experiments and accompanying devices that the USS Challenger had sent via a cargo vessel. It consisted of various micro-biological samples that doctor had started when the call was given for the Challenger to put back to space dock at Earth.
"Of course doctor." Venik said. He turned to the transporter chief, "Inform the starbase, that we have received the Doctor and to send any other officers directly here." Turning back to the green Saurian, "Are you familiar with the way, or shall I show you?" The Vulcan commander said looking up at the tall green lizard-like being.
Yiggtissi took a brief second, trying to remember the deck layout of the Wasp. He had tried to study it as much as possible during his trip from the Challenger. His memory had failed him, however. He couldn't rely on what he knew about his previous assignment as it was a Detroit Class vessel, with Sickbay located on deck four.
"I am afraid I will have to rely on your lead here sir. " He began. "The Challenger was a bit smaller than the Wasp."
And with a nod, Venik lead him from the transporter room and toward the nearest turbolift. Along the way, Yiggtissi noticed a handful of officers moving around the corridors. They passed by a couple of engineering officers who where kneeling by an open access panel. They were oblivious to the things going on behind them as the scanned the inner components. Yiggtissi walked side by side with his new commander.
"So commander, if I may ask, is this your first command posting?"
Looking over and up at the Saurian, Venik nodded, "It is indeed. I did serve as the First Officer of the USS Pend Orielle for 11 years. So I am well qualified to command this vessel." The Vulcan said as reassuringly as he could. Shortly after they arrived at the sickbay, which was on the same deck as the transporter room. "We have arrived."
The two officers stood outside main sickbay. The Saurian tugged at the bottom of his tunic to straighten out any wrinkles that might have formed due to their lengthy walk.
"I have no doubt sir." Yiggtissi stated firmly. "I am sure you are extremely well-qualified. I look forward to serving with you. If you don't mind sir, I shall like to get started in sickbay. Perhaps a brief dinner later this evening?"
The Vulcan nodded and began his journey down the corridor. The doors to sickbay slid open and the doctor stepped in. He stood for several seconds in the middle of the room. He noticed his office off to the side and made his way over. sitting down behind his deck, he tapped the red rocker switch on the panel and activated his computer. A volley of information flooded the display, including incoming medical staff that had yet to arrive. He knew it would take time but he began going over the data. Today was the first day of his new path. Chief Medical Officer.
