A place to hang my hat

Shirii Zh'vilran sat in one of the rear seats on the shuttle craft that was ferrying new crew to the USS Wasp. her attention deep into a letter she had recieved from her bond mates. it brought a tinge of sadness at their disappointment at her choice to serve aboard a StarFleet ship rather than focusing on the traditional choice to bare a child into their family. It was hard enough to explain to them that she wouldn't be serving in the Imperial Guard; telling them that she would be light years away on a Starfleet ship was not an experince she wanted to repeat any time soon. with a heavy sigh she set the P.A.D.D into her duffle and retrieved another with the technical schematics of the Wasp.
Every time she thought about it, she was like a child in what was the Human expression?.. a candy store. She had served on everything from a tug to a boarder patrol ship, but this was the first Constitution class she would have the honor of serving on. It was in fact the first one she would ever had the chance to be aboard; not counting the Enterprise but she was assigned to that ship for all of five minutes before she requested a transfer. Her friends from the academy thought she had lost her mind when she told them. "Anyone would jump at the chance to get the Enterprise" she had been told again and again. It was true, everyone wanted to serve on the Flagship; except her. It wasn't the ship that scared her off. it was the reputation of Captain Kirk. The man's shadow was so tall it intimidated her.
"So, Shirii, can I call you Shirii?" the young Human pilot asked as he swung his chair around after laying in the last course corrections and engaged the automatic pilot. "What brings you to our fine ship?"
"Um.. Sorry?" she sputtered, momentarily broken from her concentration on the warp drive upgrades to the Constitution class over the Older Saladin class. "I requested this transfer. I wanted to challenge myself and the opportunity to work on a Constitution class was too good to pass up."
"Ah, you're a grease jockey then. I take it this is the First Conny you have been aboard then?" he asked.
The young Andorian looked up at the man and set her manual down. her antennae twitched slightly at her interruption yet again. To another of her species the meaning would be clear. but to well, "lesser" species. or at least those without the ability to communicate well unspoken; the motion simply looked random. "Not entirely. I was originally posted to Enterprise but I requested to transfer to Wasp."
The man blinked suddenly at the admission. "Not that I am saying that she isn't just as fine a ship, but why wouldn't you want to serve on the Flagship? that is like a fast track to the big chair!"
Shirii chucked at the reaction. "it is. but it is also notoriously hard to maintain a posting on the Enterprise. Both Captain Kirk and commander Scott are hard to impress. I didn't want to have to worry about impressing legends at the same time I was diving into the innards of a new ship. with the turn over aboard that ship, I can always transfer back to the Enterprise later on when I get some quality hours working on the same systems here."
The man let out a low whistle then broke into a smile. "Well I have to say I have never heard that line before. Good on you for making that call. I would probably just gone with it and crashed in shame if i was in the same position. I've read some of the reports that were not classified. some of the maneuvers that ship has made.. lets just say I know my limits. Its good to see that you have thought this through. that ability to look at a situation and come up with a plan, even if the circumstances are difficult; will serve you well on a conny. We can go farther and faster than anything else in the fleet. that also means that help is a lot farther away."
"In any event, the unknown and the adventure is why we joined Starfleet right?" she asked.
"Too right." he nodded as the helm beeped. they were about to come in for final approach. "There she is. what a beauty. It will take a few more minutes to get us on the landing pad. just sit back and enjoy the rest of the flight. Oh and Welcome aboard." he said with a gallant smile.
